Ọ̀nà: The Road To Love, Heritage, And New Beginnings
As February draws to a close, we reflect on a month rich with love, heritage, and the ever-evolving journey that shapes who we are. A month of transitions, where the echoes of new year resolutions meet the warmth of Valentine’s Day, the weight of Black history, and the power of cultural expression. It is a month where past, present, and future intertwine, reminding us that life, much like the road, is both a destination and a journey. This February, the roads have been lit with moments worth pausing for; from Kendrick Lamar's Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show to Tems; the powerhouse artist snagging the Grammy for Best African Music Performance for her chart-topping hit “Love Me Jeje, to the heartbeat of Valentine’s Day, and the relentless march of Black excellence. In the spirit of Ọ̀nà—the Yoruba word for ‘road’ or ‘path’; we explore how these threads come together to define the journey of love, heritage, and self-discovery.
The Journey of Love: More Than Romance
Valentine’s Day often calls to mind romance in its most traditional sense—flowers, chocolates, candlelit dinners; but love is a road much broader than that. This year, conversations around love have taken on deeper meanings. Love as self-acceptance, love as a commitment to one’s dreams, love as the quiet resilience of a people who carry history on their backs and still move forward.
In the world of fashion, love is stitched into every design, woven into the very fabric that drapes across our skin. It is evident in the details, in the craftsmanship, in the care given to each piece. At Serah Kassim, love is about honoring the past while designing for the future, creating pieces that speak to the heart of cultural heritage while allowing the wearer to journey confidently into the world. Love is the boldness of dressing in a way that tells a story, the courage to take up space, and the commitment to preserving history through design.
Heritage and the Road We Walk
Black History Month, though largely celebrated in the U.S., has become a global moment of reflection on Black excellence, legacy, and progress. This February, the conversations have deepened, with figures like Kendrick Lamar continuing to use his artistry as a tool of storytelling and empowerment. His lyrics are more than words; they are roads leading back to the past, lessons drawn from history, and maps pointing toward the future. His voice is a bridge between generations, much like the textiles and patterns we see in African fashion—each motif a story, each weave a connection to something greater.
Tems, in her own way, embodies the road of self-discovery and authenticity. Her boldness in self-expression, in choosing her own path, reminds us that heritage is not just about looking back but about forging ahead with the essence of where we come from. Ọ̀nà is not only the road behind us but also the road ahead—the intersections of culture, identity, and artistic expression that continue to define us.
The Transition: Walking Towards a New Season
February is the bridge between the enthusiasm of January’s resolutions and the quiet determination needed to carry those intentions forward. It is where we refine our paths, where the initial excitement wears off, and true commitment begins. As we look at our personal and collective journeys, it’s worth asking: What road are we on? What footprints are we leaving behind? And how do we move forward with intention?
At Serah Kassim, the road ahead is clear. Our latest collection, inspired by the journey to Ijebu-Ode, captures the essence of travel, transition, and cultural depth. Road trips have a way of teaching us—about patience, about discovery, about embracing the beauty in the unexpected. The palm trees lining the highway, the sun-kissed landscapes, the ease of motion—all of it finds its way into designs that breathe comfort, freedom, and heritage.
The Ọ̀nà collection, much like life itself, is about movement. About carrying culture with us as we step into the future. About honoring where we come from while designing the next phase of our story.
Marching Forward: A New Collection, A New Chapter
As we step into March, we welcome a new season of creativity, storytelling, and craftsmanship. Our upcoming collection continues the journey; rooted in culture, inspired by the roads we travel, and shaped by the stories we tell. Behind the scenes, we’ve been immersed in bringing this vision to life, capturing the essence of transition and movement in every stitch, every fabric choice, and every silhouette.
The road to creation is filled with moments of inspiration—late-night sketches, fabric explorations, and the magic of seeing an idea transform into a tangible piece of art. We invite you to witness this journey with us, to step behind the curtain, and see the hands and hearts shaping this collection. Stay tuned for exclusive glimpses into our process, from mood boards to fittings, as we bring this vision to the world.
We shared a glimpse of this inspiration on Instagram; our love letter to heritage, roads, and movement. If you haven’t seen it yet, take a moment to explore this post and immerse yourself in the inspiration behind the collection. Let the journey unfold.
Walking in Love, Heritage, and Purpose
As we wrap up February, we walk forward with love; not just romantic love but love for ourselves, love for our roots, and love for the roads we are yet to travel. We honor the legacy of those who came before us, carrying their stories into our everyday lives. We embrace transition, knowing that every road—every Ọ̀nà—is leading us somewhere significant.
So as we move into the next season, let us wear our history boldly, walk with purpose, and continue carving paths that speak of love, heritage, and limitless possibilities.
The road continues. Where will yours take you?
